20 Thoughts for Life

1.    Write on paper what you want and read it daily. Filter your decisions through it.
2.    Don’t chase the money dream. It is elusive. Chase the behaviors that align with your list of wants and the money dream will become reality
3.    Stop talking about winning and start doing the actions that create the kind of outcome you want. If you do that, the results take care of themselves.
4.    Focus on what you can control and let go of what you can’t.
5.    My favorite book of all time is How to Win Friends and Influence People. It changed my life.
6.    As a Leader, you’re only as good as your team.
7.    Laughing as I did as a kid is just as relevant today, and no one laughs at me as much as I do.
8.    My favorite time of day is the morning, as the sun is rising, and no one else in the house is up. It’s when I meditate and anticipate the day.
9.    There are times when life will get hard – remember, I can do hard.
10.Yesterday is over. You have no hope of changing it. Let it go and learn.
11.Create a system for yourself. Design it so easy, small acts push you to your goal.
12.Life is too short to burn bridges. Just don’t.
13.Fear creates a world we don’t love and keeps us from realizing there can be more. Stop and ask, why do I fear?
14.Responding instead of reacting to situations is your key to handling them without any regret.
15.Money will never make you happy. Happiness comes from the inside out.
16.Self-awareness is the first step in leading others effectively. Know how others see you.
17.Uninvited, unwanted, unwelcome change shows up in our lives at times. It feels scary until we reframe it and believe this, change isn’t happening to me; change is happening for me.
18.I am grateful for those times in my life when I failed. I learned more from failing than winning, except I like winning better.
19.You can talk all you want; Actions speak louder than words. Period.
  1. Embrace the still quiet times, its when the best ideas happen.

Dawn Is breaking

I am sitting in one of the greatest settings in the world. My patio at 6 AM. Dawn is breaking, sky is blue, coffee is from Costa Rico. I am Healthy. I have a beautiful yet frustrating wife. I sip coffee and smell the honeysuckle. The hardest decision to make this early morning. Which book to listen to while I run, well walk really fast, ok while I walk.
As the day progresses, I will do what almost everyone else does. Forget how great my morning is and start to stress about the day. We tend to make life harder than it needs to be. We start to focus on the problems or issues. The more you believe you have problems, the bigger they become (perception) The more you believe something, the more you filter and ignore all information to the contrary.
My focus lately has been on goals. Goals as we know them are useless and detrimental. If you want to know more listen or watch my YouTube channel.
I digress into an area that will lose your interest.
For me this early morning routine brings relaxation and focus.
As the day goes on, we only listen to the noise that confirms our beliefs.
I consider myself a student of human behavior.
I am just like you. I look for what confirms my beliefs.
In 1995 I was part of a steering committee for Toyota Motor Sales. We met in San Francisco and charted a course for Toyota to progress into the internet age. This was where I heard, for the first time, our industry must change or die. We conducted surveys, had focus groups, attended seminars. Change or die was the mantra.
Was it true?
We all look for the reasons to prove it true because we believe it. Customers told us, we want transparency, we hate the process, we do not want to negotiate. JD Powers, NADA, Driving Sales, VAuto, they all told us its true. Here are the statistics to prove it. Now we are being told customers want to buy online then pick up the car without a salesperson. Carvana, Free. Its what customers want, dealers are going to die.
I seem to remember when Carmax was going to destroy our business. It was the model of the future.
Change or Die. It is a Mantra.
Is it true? We must believe it. Seminars are built around it. SEO, SEM, Website visits, Leads, closing percent on those leads. We have become statistically driven. Treating the sales person as a fool. Plug and play. Make 40 calls a day, respond to 10 emails, and more. Dealersocket has given us the power.
I have been to several conferences this past two years. Attended several presentations, listen to keynote speakers. If I take out the motivational hard life success speakers, everything else focused on statistics, getting more customers to click. We all drink from the Kool-aid, change or die.
We listen to experts in every field except ours. Your website must look like this, CTAs must be this way. We pay huge money for it. As we should.
I just find it disheartening that our industry is willing to pay so much money for the next Shiny Object.
Yet, we are not willing to listen or invest money and time in our people. As I said earlier. The corporate attitude is, salespeople are plug and play. It just is not true.

Our world is run by the 10% minority

Our world is run by the 10% minority. Our country is not run by a majority. It is the vocal minority from right and left. Todays politics have allowed a vocal minority from both sides to bring their opinions to the world.  Our politicians are to afraid to voice a contrary opinion. Fearful of what this minority will do. 20 years ago, the hint of a scandal took down the presidential favorite. He had to drop out. Two years ago, a recording of a presidential candidate saying vile things about women did nothing. Paying off two women. Cheating on his wife while pregnant. Nothing.
The best the extreme left can do. 20 plus people running for president, useless investigations instead of trying to work across aisles and accomplish what is best for our country. Anything but Trump has been the rallying cry. Sounds a lot like Jason Chaffetz and his anything but Obama or Clinton investigations.
Democrat or Republican. It has become the norm to call each other vile names, to spread fake stories at the same time we are calling the media the enemy. The only opinion that matters is yours. If I disagree, call me names and bully me.
It is the prevailing opinion of Utah legislature as well. A majority vote means nothing. The vocal minority is all that matters. They know better than the rest of us. Two examples, John Curtis and Gary Herbert. Both would not have been in the race if the only way in was the vocal minority. They both won their races by a landslide. This is how we take back our country.
I am amazed at the opinion of many of my friends. I did not realize they were such activists. Facebook has given them a forum to disparage anyone on the left. I am saddened by their attitude of isolationism and to hell with everyone else.
I also know we all can have whatever opinion we want.
I do not think our country is as divided as it appears. Unfortunately, all that needs to happen for the vocal minority to win, the rest of us do nothing.
I ask all of us to stop. Smell the roses. Our country is wonderful. We are as diverse as the world. Do not let “The Lunatic Fringe” be our motto.
Find a way to work together. Our constitution was written by the left, middle and right. Let’s do it again.
I refuse to accept this new norm. My father taught me to respect everyone. No bullying, no name calling. Your opinion is important, even if it is different than mine.
The majority know the way. Let the world hear our voice.

It’s not about you

Regardless of what you think, you are right. If you think you can, you will. If you think you are not capable, or that you will fail, more than likely you are right. If you think you are brilliant, can accomplish anything you decide to do, more than likely, you are right.

Follow these ten steps to confidence. Pick one or two, pick five or all ten. One day at a time you will build your confidence. Every day will bring more strength.

1.    It’s not about you.

There is never a reason to link someone's behavior to you. Peoples actions rarely have anything to do with you. Your reaction to the environment around you has everything to do with you. It is your choice. Remember someone else's actions are rarely about you. It is easy to read others actions and see it as a slight to us. People are people. There is never need to link their reaction to our happiness.

2.    Buy clothes that fit.

If we feel good, we look good; we exude confidenceEvery time we leave home and think we look good we are much more confident. Don't wait until you have arrived at some magical time. Love what you’re wearing, and the world is likely to love it too.

3.    Keep laughing.

Laugh, laugh every dayIf you find your mood is dark, make way for laughter. Laughter truly is the best medicine. Don’t overdo it but some levity brings great confidence. Laughter releases the tension that builds every day.

4.    Embrace the quiet.

We do not have to fill every waking moment with activity. Learn to meditate. Be comfortable being alone with your thoughts. It will breed confidence and solutions. Again, embrace the quiet.

5.    Make a budget.

The most prominent worries in our life are almost always financial. Confidence does not necessarily come with a lot of cash. It still comes with knowing how to handle your finances. Not spending all your energy worrying about money frees you to be whatever you choose.

6.    Don’t gossip.

None of us like it when someone gossips about us. Spreading lies or half-truths. Sometimes it makes us feel accepted and in the loop. Think, you want to be included in this loop? No one becomes better by spreading gossip.

7.    Do what you say you are going to, say what you are going to do.

A man indeed is weak if he gives up his honor. Do what you say you will do. Confidence comes when you do not have to decide, the decision is already made at a subconscious level.

8.    Make peace with your body.

You always want to improve your health, stay active. It is essential to your well being and health. That said, no matter your size, wrinkles shape, know you deserve respect and love from all around you. Confidence will be your guide.

9.    Understand you know more than you think you do.

I often caution people to remember we are all different and we are. We all get caught in a trap that everyone knows more than us, and we are going to be exposed as a fraud. It is just not right. Give your self-benefit you know more than you think you do. Admit when you do not have an answer. A massive step to building your daily confidence.

10.Be enthusiastic.

Be happy, be excited and let everyone know. Playing it cool was great for high school. It ignores your emotions and buries the real you. Your enthusiasm will be contagious as will the confidence it gives you.

Remember, you are always in the right place, at the right time if you have the right attitude.

I am the New Year. Opportunity knocks, it is your turn to answer.

Have you ever noticed that opportunity keeps trying to happen to you.

Opportunity knocks on the door and you say, "Go away, I'm looking for my opportunity," and so it goes away. Puzzling.

Opportunity Now
I am the new year.
I am an unspoiled page in your book of time.
I am your next chance at the art of living,
I am your opportunity to practice what you have learned during the last twelve months of our life.
All that you sought the last year and failed to find is hidden in me.
I am waiting for you to search it out again with more determination.
In me lies the potential of all that you dreamed but did not dare to do.
All that you hoped but did not perform.
All that you paid for but did not yet experience.
These dreams slumber lightly waiting to be awakened by a touch of an enduring purpose.

Get a new sense of purpose in your life. One of the great facts of life, Opportunity never goes away. As Elbert Hubbard said, "The actual fact is, Opportunity not only knocks on your door, it is playing the anvil chorus at every door then waits around the corner with a club."

You are always in the right place at the right time if you have the right attitude
